Levada Nova and Levada do Moinho are linked, it’s up to you which one you choose first. However, if you don’t feel like doing both, you can choose only one, but then you will return via the same route. Levada Nova has a tunnel along its route, where you walk under a small waterfall, we recommend taking a raincoat. If you take the Levada to Moinho first (like we did), you’ll be returning to your car along a road that also offers great views of the surrounding countryside and town. In total, the route is about 8.3 km (depending on where you park) and took us just under 2 and a half hours.
The roads can be quite narrow, so be careful, they can be slippery in places. Overall, hiking the Levada do Moinho and Levada Nova offers an unforgettable experience. Be sure to bring water, snacks and a headlamp for the tunnel passage – although in this case you would be fine with a cell phone light.
