Macocha cable car

The cableway connecting the Punkva outlet with the upper bridge of the Macocha abyss is the steepest cableway in the Czech Republic with its 40° inclination. In 2026, this technical uniqueness, which has been in operation since 1995, underwent a major modernisation on the occasion of its 30th anniversary. During the winter shutdown, it was equipped with completely new electrical equipment, a more powerful motor and a modern control system, which is now connected to a central control room in Austria.

Along the 249-metre route, two cabs cover a height difference of 131 metres in just two minutes, and from 2025, thanks to a new platform at the lower station, the entire track is fully wheelchair accessible and accessible for families with prams.

The ride over the limestone rocks of the Deserted Trough is a test of courage for many, but above all a practical tool – it saves you the difficult climb from the Punkva Caves to the upper view of the abyss. If you’re going to Macocha, we recommend using the cable car as part of a circuit: be taken up and walk back down along the marked trail, or vice versa. For lovers of technology, it is interesting to see the engine room in the lower station, which is uniquely designed in the Czech Republic because of the extreme slope of the track.
