Do you like alpine hiking? Then you will be interested in the High Tatras, the longest mountain system in Austria and the largest protected area in the Alps, with a length of 200 km. The Hohe Tauern are located on the borders of the federal states of Carinthia, Tyrol and Salzburg. There are several reasons to come here. In addition to the incredible views, you can also enjoy the rich fauna here. During our two-day trek we had the opportunity to see chamois, ibex, eagles and vultures.

In summer, the Taurus are great for cycling and trekking. In some places the snow remains even at lower altitudes and the paths along the slopes are sometimes secured with chains or ropes. In winter, the area is very popular for skiing. If you want to make some excursion destinations, you might be interested to know that Austria’s largest glacier – Pasterze (2,400 ha), Austria’s highest waterfall – Walcherfall (500 m) or Europe’s largest waterfalls – Krimmel Falls– are located here. There are a large number of glacial lakes and even if you don’t have a plan in advance, you’re bound to come across some.

During the trekking you can stay in one of the mountain huts, which offer accommodation in multi-bed rooms with breakfast. So you don’t have to go heavy, but only with a smaller backpack. The High Tatras will be enjoyed by more experienced trekkers who are not afraid of climbing higher altitudes.
