The Polarmuseet, or Polar Museum, in Tromsø is a fascinating museum dedicated to the history of Arctic expeditions, hunting and exploration in the northern regions. Housed in a historic building dating back to 1830, which was formerly used as a warehouse on the waterfront, it now offers visitors a glimpse into the past of polar exploration. The exhibitions tell the stories of famous polar explorers such as Fridtjof Nansen and Roald Amundsen, and show how people have adapted to the extreme conditions of the Arctic over the centuries. Visitors can see authentic equipment, hunting traps, photographs and even replicas of polar camps.
The museum is ideal for those who want to understand the importance of Tromsø as a starting point for Arctic expeditions. In addition to the history of seal and bear hunting, you can also learn about scientific research and current conservation in the Arctic. The signs at the various exhibitions are mostly in Norwegian, but at the entrance you will also be given an English guide on several A4 sheets. Polarmuseet is an ideal place not only in bad weather, it is a really interesting insight into history, but more for adults.
The museum is open Monday to Sunday from 11:00 to 17:00. An adult ticket is NOK 120 (roughly CZK 260), children under 18 are free.
