Royal Palace of Caserta (Reggia di Caserta)

Reggia di Caserta is one of the largest and most impressive royal residences in Europe. This monumental building, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was built in the 18th century at the request of King Charles III of the House of Bourbon, who wanted to create a residence that could rival Versailles in France. It’s safe to say that although it’s hard to decide which of these residences is more impressive, the Reggia di Caserta certainly doesn’t disgrace its nickname of “theItalian Versailles”. The palace has more than 1,200 rooms, vast ceremonial halls, ornate ceilings, grand royal apartments and an impressive theatre inspired by the famous Teatro San Carlo, located in Naples. The greatest architectural jewel of the interior is the monumental staircase that stuns every visitor at the entrance.

Behind the palace is a large park, which is a reason to visit. A three-kilometre-long avenue with fountains, statues and water cascades leads to an artificial waterfall, which is the end of a system of water reservoirs fed from the mountains. There is also a romantic English Garden, full of exotic plants, ponds and hidden corners, which is like a small botanical paradise. For a more comfortable tour, you can rent an electric bike or use the shuttle bus that runs along the main route.

Caserta is ideal as a day trip from Naples – the train takes 40 minutes and stops right outside the palace. If you’re into history, architecture or just want to spend a day in a really special setting, the Reggia di Caserta will not disappoint.
