The SchafbergBahn is the name given to the famous toboggan train that runs from the town of St. Wolfgang to the top of the Schafberg. It is a historic line that dates back to 1893 and it is from these years that the original carriages are still in use today, supplemented by more modern versions. In addition, one of the original locomotives is on display in the lobby of the lower station, which, incidentally, is a beautiful modern building with a restaurant.

The lower station of this line is located near the centre of St. Wolfgang, just a few steps from Lake Wolfgangsee. The entire route to the top of the Schafberg is just under 6 km long, and the climb takes the cogwheeler up an incredible 1,190 vertical metres. All this in just 35 minutes. The SchafbergBahn has been in season since the beginning of March, weather permitting. Unfortunately, we saw this fact for ourselves during our visit in mid-April 2024 – fresh snow fell and the train did not even reach the intermediate station Schafbergalm at 1,365 metres above sea level, let alone the very top. We recommend checking the current operating hours before you visit so that you are not unpleasantly surprised. In summer, however, a visit to this gem in nature is likely to be trouble-free.

The hike to the top is a great experience and when you add in the views of the Wolfgangsee and the surrounding peaks, possible hikes around the area or refreshments in several restaurants, it’s a great tip for a half-day or even a full-day trip.

Operating hours

The SchafbergBahn has been in limited operation since the beginning of March, with the main season running from the end of April until the beginning of November. There are also special autumn runs during November and Advent. You can always find up-to-date information on the official cog railway website.

Admission

A trip on this exceptional cogwheel is not a cheap affair. One trip for an adult costs 36 euros, or 51 euros for a round trip. A child’s ticket costs 18 and 25 euros respectively. Dogs ride for free, but a muzzle is a requirement.
