The Sigmund-Thun-Klamm is a natural gem located near the Austrian town of Kaprun in the Salzburg Alps. The gorge was formed by glacial forces and the Kapruner Ache River, which carved its way through the hard limestone rock. The gorge is named after Sigmund Thun, an engineer and water pioneer who played a key role in the construction of the dam in the area.
Visitors find Sigmund-Thun-Klamm a fascinating and adventurous experience. The path leads just above the bubbling and very strong water, along a nicely made wooden path. There is a slight incline here and there, but the place is really worth a visit. At the end of the gorge, you will not only find the waterfall of the same name, but also the Klammsee lake, which we can definitely recommend visiting.
The normal opening hours are 9:00 – 17:30, but the season must be taken into account. The fair is open mainly in summer and autumn – it is closed all winter, usually from the beginning of November until spring. We therefore recommend that you always check the current opening hours on the official website before visiting the gorge.
You can park for free in one of the dedicated car parks around the gorge. We generally recommend visiting this place, especially on weekends, rather in the morning hours. This way you will avoid not only the crowds at the gorge itself, but also the problems of finding a parking space.
