Place description
The Solvay Quarries are located near the well-known viewpoint Svatý Jan pod Skalou, less than 30 minutes from Prague. It is a former limestone mine, where it was mined until 1964. Subsequently, in 1993 a museum of limestone mining and transport was established here and in 2014 the rock formations in the quarry became a climbing destination in the Czech Karst. It is thus a place with a rich history.
There are also many caves in the vicinity of the quarry, such as the Arnika Cave. In addition, there is an original railroad that runs through the area and “turns” at the Solvay Quarries Mining Museum. However, it is only open from May to October – if you go here like we did outside the main season, you will have to “make do” with nature. We recommend that you combine a visit to the quarry with a visit to Svatý Jan pod Skalou and take the red hiking trail, which connects to the Svatoyanský circuit in the quarry. The entire route will be just over 4 km with an elevation gain of over 200 metres.
