Svínafellsjökull

Svínafellsjökull is another of the many glaciers on the south coast of Iceland. It is a very accessible glacier that empties into a glacial lake, which is reached by a short path directly from the car park. You take a dirt road and the drive there is just under 1.5 kilometres. There are various educational signs at the site, for example you can see how far the glacier was between 1920 and 1925 and how far it is now.

Compared to the Sólheimajökull glacier, this one can be reached within a few centimetres – it’s a great spectacle to see not only the ice structure up close, but also the layers of volcanic ash that, together with the ice, make up most of the glaciers here in Iceland.
