The Pinnacles

The Pinnacles, located in Nambung National Park about 200 kilometres north of Perth, are one of the most spectacular natural phenomena in Western Australia. The area is dotted with thousands of limestone columns that formed 20 to 30 thousand years ago, rising from the fine yellow sand to create an almost otherworldly scenery. Some of the formations reach up to three and a half metres high and their strange shapes and shadows change constantly throughout the day depending on the position of the sun.

There are two ways to see The Pinnacles, either by walking along the hiking trail or driving around the area. We combined both options, we drove the trail and then also took a short walk (Desert View Walk Trail measuring 1.2 km) from the visitor center. Early in the morning or at sunset, the landscape takes on a special golden hue and offers breathtaking photo opportunities. After dark, the area is a popular spot for stargazing, and thanks to minimal light pollution, you can see the bright Milky Way.

In the visitor centre near the entrance to the park, you can learn more about the origins of these fascinating formations and the local nature. We were also lucky enough to see kangaroos here, which we observed from one of the many viewing points.
