Val d’Orcia is also known as the Orcia Valley. It is one of the most famous and beautiful valleys of the Tuscan countryside, enchanting with its beautiful nature, picturesque villages and rich history. This valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is located in central Italy and lies between the towns of Siena and Grosseto.

One of the most striking features of the Val d’Orcia landscape is its rolling hills, which are covered with olive trees, vineyards and typical cypress trees. This picturesque landscape has been the inspiration for many artists, including Renaissance painters such as Leonardo da Vinci, and today attracts photographers from all over the world. So if you like photo-trips, this is the place for you!

The Val d’Orcia is also home to many picturesque Tuscan villages, such as Pienza, Montalcino and Montepulciano. For history lovers, there are many interesting sights to explore in the Orcia Valley. One of the most famous is Castiglione d’Orcia Castle. Other places of interest are the Monastery of Sant’Antimo, famous for its Romanesque architecture, and the thermal baths of Bagno Vignoni. We definitely recommend a visit to the Cappella della Madonna di Vitaleta. A walk around it will offer you the best of Tuscany.

Parking and refreshments

In cities, we recommend parking in the car parks of supermarkets such as Coop. It will be free and there will usually be plenty of spaces available. If you’re going to park at monuments, we recommend using dedicated parking, which will usually be free. In Tuscany, you’ll also find a few dusty parking spots just off the road where you can conveniently stop and take a walk around or take a quick photo.

As for snacks, if you’re in a hurry, we recommend a panini to go. In smaller towns like Pienza, these paninerias are smaller shops with fresh local ingredients and therefore you can’t go wrong. If you have time, be sure to visit a classic Tuscan restaurant overlooking the Tuscan countryside and enjoy a glass of local wine.
