Velika planina is a large plateau located in the Slovenian Kamnik-Savinja Alps. The area is famous for its traditional shepherd’s huts and spectacular views of the green landscape and mountains. Velika Planina is located near the town of Kamnik and is a popular tourist destination all year round, although we recommend visiting it in summer.
Besides the traditional shepherd’s village, Velika Planina offers many hiking trails of varying difficulty in the surrounding area. The trail to Velika Planina is well marked and leads from the village of Kamniška Bistrica. From the bottom station of the Nihalka cable car it is approximately 15 minutes by cable car or a longer climb. On the plateau itself there are various hiking trails that will take you around the area. In the shepherd’s huts above you can taste local cheeses and other specialties. Some of the huts also offer overnight accommodation. Throughout the area there are endless paddocks for the cows to graze on. The views are therefore even a little bit nicer.
In winter, Velika planina is a popular place for cross-country skiing and sledding.
Parking is available at the bottom station of the cable car in Kamniška Bistrica. The parking lot is well marked, paid and is located directly at the cable car boarding point. From there you can continue on the cable car to the platform or walk along the marked trail.
