Vikaköngäs

Vikaköngäs, near Rovaniemi in Finland, is one of the most beautiful natural areas in Lapland. In summer, the area offers countless opportunities for hiking, along the river of the same name and further into the wilderness. Even in winter, when we visited, there are several accessible trails, whether it’s across the iconic pedestrian bridge or to the nearby Vaattunkivaara lookout tower. However, count on the fact that you won’t be able to do much here without good equipment, sturdy shoes or even snowshoes. Over the bridge, to the lookout tower and back is a route of just over 4 kilometres with a 100 metre elevation gain.

In this area, as in others throughout Lapland, you will also find a variety of shelters where you can build a fire. The more adventurous hikers even sleep here, even in winter.
