Place description
The Zelenci Nature Reserve is located just a few kilometres from Kranjska Gora and is one of the most beautiful and photogenic places in the Julian Alps. The reserve is especially famous for its emerald-coloured lake, which is fed by underground springs from the Sava Dolinka River. The water is crystal clear all year round and never freezes – even in winter it retains its typical green-blue colour.
The surrounding area is home to many species of plants and animals, including protected species. Wooden walkways and an observation tower allow for comfortable walking and nature watching without disturbing the local ecosystem. Zelenci is an ideal destination for a short trip, either as a stop on the way around the area or as part of a hike or bike tour. A short trail leads from the main road and parking lot to Zelenci, which can be walked in 5-10 minutes. We honestly expected the reserve to be larger, but its size doesn’t detract from its beauty.
The place also has a symbolic significance – it is the source of one of Slovenia’s most important rivers, the Sava. Zelenci is not only a visual experience, but also a unique natural phenomenon with a calm, meditative atmosphere that will be loved by nature lovers and photographers alike.
