If you’re starting your journey from north to south, it’s not a problem to switch itineraries and just start at the end. Just have fun and don’t forget to let us know how you enjoyed your trip.
If you are not travelling by car, or if you are flying to Narvik or Leskenes, for example, we recommend renting a van/car directly on the islands.

The first day on the islands is dedicated to exploring the westernmost part of the islands. You will discover a picturesque town, a delicious bakery with famous cinnamon snails, as well as beautiful views of the sea, lake and surrounding nature. If you have time, be sure to take a trek around Lake Ågvatnet.
We start by leaving the ferry at Moskenes in the Lofoten Islands.

This car park is for visitors to Å. Parking is more difficult in the surrounding area, so we recommend using this free car park. Please note that parking is limited to 6 hours. If you plan to sleep longer than 6 hours, overnight parking is not possible. Still, many RVs stay overnight after unloading from the overnight ferry. The car park offers plenty of space, but in high season this car park can also be full, so we recommend arriving early. Parking is for cars and motorhomes (as in almost all of Lofoten). It is a 5 minute walk to the town centre and no more than 10 minutes to the rocks with their spectacular views. There are public toilets, otherwise no other services.

We start with a tour of the small town of Å with its fishing tradition and beautiful typical red houses. Even though the town is small, a tour with photo session can take well over an hour. If you are in the mood for something good, you simply must visit the Å bakery, ideally in the morning. It is located in the centre of the town and you can tell by the crowds of people waiting for fresh pastries.
Å is located on the Lofoten Islands in Norway and is the southernmost point of the archipelago. Interestingly, Å is one of the towns with the shortest name in the world. Depending on which direction you are travelling, Å could be your first or last stop in Lofoten.
It is a traditional fishing town with a historic character, where you will find well-preserved wooden houses as a testimony to the old times. The town is really small and a walk around it will definitely not take more than an hour. During your visit, you can pop into the local bakery and taste the traditional pastries. The snails from the bakery in Å were some of the best we’ve tasted in Norway!
It also offers an insight into the history and culture of the Lofoten Islands. The Lofoten Museum (Lofotmuseet) in Å presents the traditional way of life of the fishermen on the islands. Visitors will find well-preserved rorbuer houses where they can get a glimpse of how fishermen lived in past centuries. In addition, there is also a display of traditional tools, boats and equipment used in fishing.
Another interesting place is the Stockfish Museum, which is dedicated to the tradition of dried fish production, especially cod, which has been an important element of the Lofoten economy for centuries.
The surrounding area also offers excellent hiking opportunities with many views of the town and surrounding countryside. Parking here is easy and well signposted, making it easy to explore the city on foot. With sea gulls in the air and the sound of the waves in the background, the town provides an authentic Norwegian-lofty atmosphere. If you are planning a visit to Lofoten, Å is a place you should definitely not miss.

Sørvågen • $$
This bakery, V metěček Å, is one of the best we’ve been to in Norks. It’s a historic bakery in an old wooden house with a tiny seating area inside or outside. You can sample great snails, or savory focaccia or other devilishly baked pastries. Whatever you choose, you won’t regret it. Be prepared to probably get your fill if you eat one in season. Warning: only open seasonally.
0.5 km (8 mins)
An amazing viewpoint at the very edge of Lofoten overlooking the endless sea and surrounding rocks. Here you will find peace and an escape from the tourists, while understanding the true beauty of Lofoten. Don’t expect any benches or vantage points. The surrounding rocks serve as the vantage point itself, where you can walk around and take as many photos as you like. There are more viewpoints, so we recommend exploring the area a bit on your own.
This place is actually a short walk from Å and you can also start your journey/trek to the next viewpoint Ågvatnet.
If you have pets, feel free to bring them along. Also, don’t expect a steep climb and a challenging trail, you can certainly do it in ordinary sneakers.
If you have the time and inclination, we recommend a walk around the area to the viewpoint at Ågvatnet Lake, where you can also enjoy views of Å.
0.9 km (12 mins)
This viewpoint is located at the southern tip of Lofoten and offers great views of the eponymous lake Ågvatnet, the town of Å and the surrounding very specific Lofoten nature. The viewpoint can only be reached on foot. If you park in the car park in Å, you will have a 30-minute walk with a small elevation gain. If you want to extend your walk, we recommend going around the entire circuit around the lake, which is just under 7 kilometres.
The environment is truly pristine with no commercial stops or refreshments. That is why we recommend to bring water and a snack. When you want to refresh yourself, take a dip right in the icy lake below. The path to the viewpoint is not paved, it is part of a hiking trail and therefore we also recommend good footwear. You are sure to encounter rocks, mud, gravel and grass.
If you have a dog, bring it with you. It’s one of the few treks in the Lofoten Islands that doesn’t go uphill too much, so you can all really enjoy it.
You can extend the hike from the viewpoint and go around the lake, which we definitely recommend. From the viewpoint you can see a beautiful sunset. The full route from the viewpoint across the lake to the parking lot is listed here. The route is 7.5 km long and can be completed in 3 hours. Don’t forget to wear suitable hiking shoes.

Your six-hour parking permit has probably expired, so it’s best to move to a car park where you can spend the night. It may not be the prettiest parking lot you’ll see on this trip, but you’ll love its location and proximity to attractions.

The semi-arc asphalt Steffenakken car park has a capacity for about 15 cars or cars. It is quite busy during the day, but very quiet at night, even though it is located right next to the road. Its excellent location not only allows you to visit Djupfjordbrua, which is right next door, but it is also close to the famous Reinebringen or the small town of Reine. Plus, this is free parking, something you won’t find in Reine. Opposite the asphalt car park, there is a rest area on an unpaved road where you can park your car too. Without any services.
