Å

Å is located on the Lofoten Islands in Norway and is the southernmost point of the archipelago. Interestingly, Å is one of the towns with the shortest name in the world. Depending on which direction you are travelling, Å could be your first or last stop in Lofoten.

It is a traditional fishing town with a historic character, where you will find well-preserved wooden houses as a testimony to the old times. The town is really small and a walk around it will definitely not take more than an hour. During your visit, you can pop into the local bakery and taste the traditional pastries. The snails from the bakery in Å were some of the best we’ve tasted in Norway!

It also offers an insight into the history and culture of the Lofoten Islands. The Lofoten Museum (Lofotmuseet) in Å presents the traditional way of life of the fishermen on the islands. Visitors will find well-preserved rorbuer houses where they can get a glimpse of how fishermen lived in past centuries. In addition, there is also a display of traditional tools, boats and equipment used in fishing.

Another interesting place is the Stockfish Museum, which is dedicated to the tradition of dried fish production, especially cod, which has been an important element of the Lofoten economy for centuries.

The surrounding area also offers excellent hiking opportunities with many views of the town and surrounding countryside. Parking here is easy and well signposted, making it easy to explore the city on foot. With sea gulls in the air and the sound of the waves in the background, the town provides an authentic Norwegian-lofty atmosphere. If you are planning a visit to Lofoten, Å is a place you should definitely not miss.
