Arctic Cathedral

Arctic Cathedral, or Ishavskatedralen, is an iconic modern building in Tromsø, its distinctive triangular shape reminiscent of a glacier or tent used by the Sami people. This architectural gem was built in 1965 and has become one of the city’s most famous symbols. Located on the east bank of the Tromsø Sound, its white facade contrasts with the surrounding rugged landscape, especially in the winter months when it is covered in snow. The cathedral’s biggest attraction is its monumental stained glass window, one of the largest in Europe, which creates a magical atmosphere at sunset. Even after dark, the cathedral is an absolutely iconic place in the whole of Tromsø.

The cathedral, which is actually a “mere” church, is easily accessible from the city centre – just cross the iconic Tromsøbrua Bridge. We recommend not only walking around the immediate area of the cathedral, but also visiting the bridge, from where you can see Ishavskatedralen beautifully. Just be careful, from the view from the cathedral you have to take the left side of the bridge, the right side is for cyclists only.
