Fjellheisen is a cable car in Tromsø, Norway, which takes visitors up to Storsteinen Mountain (421 m above sea level), where you can enjoy a beautiful panoramic view of the entire city, the surrounding fjords and the surrounding mountain ridges. The ride takes only a few minutes, but it is a great experience. Especially at sunset or in the winter months, when you can see the Northern Lights dancing over the snowy landscape. Fjellheisen is a popular destination for travellers all year round, whether it’s hikers looking for the best views, photographers looking for the perfect shot, or outdoor enthusiasts going on hikes from here.
For more active visitors, it is also possible to climb to the top on foot via the so-called Sherpa stairs, a more challenging but all the more rewarding journey. In winter, however, this may not be a completely safe option. Not only on the summit there is usually a lot of snow or ice and if you go here in winter, like us, we recommend packing a pack.
The top of the mountain, which offers several views of the whole of Tromsø, including the iconic bridge and Arctic Cathedral, is often blown and icy. In addition to the viewing platform directly above the cable car, we recommend taking a more rightward walk to the railings. The view here is beautiful not only during the day, but also in the evening after dark. So if you have enough time in Tromsø, consider a double visit.
The cable car runs on normal days from 9:00 until midnight. It is thus possible to see not only the view of Tromsø during the day, but also at night. This is also why it is one of the best places to see the Northern Lights in the city. A return ticket for one in February 2025 was NOK 545, or just under 1 200 CZK. Tickets can be bought online on the official website, at the self-service kiosk inside the cable car or at the ticket office.
At the top, there is an observation deck and Fjellstua Restaurant, where you can enjoy a hot drink or typical Norwegian specialities with views of the city below.

A small car park at the Fjellheisen cable car, from where it is only a few steps to the cable car. The parking lot is for about 30 – 40 cars, so you may have trouble finding a spot at peak times. But it’s worth waiting a while. You can pay the parking fee either via the EasyPark app or at the on-site machine. In the case of the on-site machine, you just need to put a ticket behind the windscreen.
