Henningsvær, often referred to as the “Venice of Lofoten”, is a picturesque fishing town situated on several small islands connected by bridges. Its traditional wooden houses, positioned just off the water, and playful harbour boats attract visitors from all over the world, so expect a packed house.
Henningsvær is located on the southwestern tip of Austvågøya, part of the Lofoten Islands. There is a well-maintained road leading to the town, making it easily accessible by car. There are several paid parking lots in the town, which you will have no problem finding.
In the local harbour you can watch local fishermen at work, stroll among traditional fishing boats or enjoy fresh seafood in local restaurants. Also like in other towns in Lofoten you will find several typical red houses. What is unique in Henningsvær is the unusual football stadium, which is surrounded by sea and mountains and is often referred to as one of the most beautiful stadiums in the world. So don’t forget your cameras. The local lighthouse is also a popular spot for visitors who want to get a panoramic view of the city and surrounding countryside.
This small town is also home to a number of artists and craftspeople, so you’ll find several galleries and shops offering handmade products. Boats can be rented in town, or paddle boards can be used to explore the water. We also recommend sampling the goodies at the bakery or grabbing a good lunch. There are several options in town.
