Hutt Lagoon, known as one of the world’s most spectacular pink lakes, is located on the west coast of Australia near the town of Port Gregory, about 500 kilometres north of Perth. The lake gets its stunning pink colour from the presence of the algae Dunaliella salina, which produces the red pigment beta-carotene. The hue of the water changes depending on daylight, season and weather – from a soft pink to a deep red or orange.
The best time to visit Hutt Lagoon is around midday on sunny days, when the water colour is at its most intense. You can see the lake from close by by driving along the surrounding roads, and drone owners will be especially excited – the view of the lake is beautiful from above.
However, it is important to take into account that the colour of the lake is very dependent on the weather. If the water is very diluted, which can happen after frequent rains, the water may not stand out at all. When we visited the site, the lake was quite dry and so it was possible to walk on the pink salt parts.
