Lake Antholz, also known as Antholzer See, is a picturesque mountain lake located in South Tyrol in northern Italy. It is surrounded by majestic mountains and dense forests, making it an ideal destination for nature lovers and active relaxation.

The lake is famous for its beautiful, almost impossibly blue water. It is a relatively small lake, with a length of about 1.5 km and a maximum width of 300 metres. Despite its modest size, the lake is deep, reaching up to 36 metres. It is located at an altitude of approximately 1,642 metres above sea level and is part of the Rieserferner-Ahrn Nature Park, an area known for its diverse fauna and flora. The surrounding forests are home to many species of wild animals such as deer, chamois and various birds. In the summer months, the lake is the starting point for many hiking and mountain trails that lead through the beautiful surrounding countryside. Other popular activities include hiking, mountain biking and fishing. Paddleboarding is also possible on the lake, but you will need to bring your own board. In the winter months, the lake surroundings turn into a paradise for winter sports enthusiasts with plenty of trails for cross-country skiing, sledding and snowshoeing. There is also the smaller ski resort of Antholzertal nearby.

The Antholz location itself is known for its calm and relaxed atmosphere. The area is home to several small villages that offer traditional accommodation such as cosy mountain huts and guesthouses. The region is known for its rich folklore and traditional festivals that reflect a unique blend of Italian and Austrian culture. There are several historical sites around the lake, including old churches and chapels that bear witness to the area’s long history. Antholz is also known for its sporting events, especially international biathlon competitions. Every year, one of the biathlon World Cup stops takes place here, attracting many visitors and sports fans from all over the world.

We highly recommend this destination for its unspoilt nature, beautiful surroundings and the best of the Italian and Austrian Alps.

Tips for places to eat in the area

Platzl am See
