The Olšina Nature Trail, located near Horní Plana in Šumava, is a unique area where you can explore wild nature. The trail is approximately 7.3 kilometres long and leads around the Olšina pond, the highest breeding pond in the Czech Republic. During the walk, you will enjoy a view of the diverse fauna and flora, including wetlands, meadows and woodlands. The trail is accompanied by several informative panels that introduce the local ecosystem, fish farming and the history of the region.
The trail is suitable for families with children and easy hikers, thanks to wooden walkways and footbridges it is accessible all year round – if it is less accessible due to weather, you can find out about it on the official website of the trail and at the information centre. There are resting places with benches and viewpoints along the trail, which offer beautiful views of the Šumava landscape. We had been looking forward to visiting the Olšina nature trail for a long time and it definitely met our expectations. During our visit at the end of December 2024, we met about 6 people along the whole trail, but we recommend that you take a break and go on the trail as early in the morning as possible or before sunset. Not only because of the beautiful light, but also just the number of other visitors or limited parking.
The most iconic spot of the entire trail, which you’ve probably seen somewhere on social media, is the wooden bridge after about 2 kilometres of the trail. We recommend a small stop here, it is a really beautiful place. On the other hand, the last 2 or so kilometers of the trail you will be returning along the road past the pond, so you need to enjoy the previous quiet and beauty of the trail.
Even though there is a hotel, campsite and information centre at the trailhead, expect that not everything may be open all year round. On our visit in December, it was quite “dead”.
