Place description
Strumboding is a waterfall near the village of Hinterstoder in the Kalkalpen National Park in Upper Austria. It’s a short detour from the highway and there isn’t much else in the immediate vicinity, but it’s well worth it. Entry is free, and the main attraction isn’t so much the waterfall itself as the surrounding gorge, through which the Steyr River flows with exceptionally clear water. Unlike the famous Austrian gorges with ticket booths and entrance fees, this is a freely accessible spot.
A trail leads to the waterfall along the river, about 2 kilometers long each way. The forest path is pleasantly cool in the summer, but it’s not suitable for strollers; in some places, it’s narrow and runs along steep drops. Along the route, you’ll cross the river over several bridges, and when the water levels are good, you’ll often spot kayakers navigating the rapids below you.
We enjoyed the river even more than the waterfall itself. The water is so clear that you can see all the way to the bottom, and together with the bridges and the peaceful forest, it makes for a pleasant break on your journey. The waterfall isn’t particularly high, but the combination of the gorge, the crystal-clear water, and the kayakers makes it worth the small detour.
