Calvary Frauenberg

The Frauenberg Calvary is located in close proximity to the pilgrimage church and forms a unique unit with it. It is a Baroque set of Stations of the Cross dominated by six chapels located along the path to the main chapel of Calvary on a slight hill. The entire route is lined with a historic lime avenue, which adds to the intimacy and tranquillity of the place. This architecture is considered one of the purest examples of Baroque landscape design in Austria and is protected as a cultural monument.

Walking up to this building, we were immediately struck by how photogenic the whole place is – the combination of the white facades of the chapels, the old alley and the dramatic Alpine peaks in the background is an absolute paradise for photographers. If you’re looking for a quieter alternative to the busier surroundings of the Admont Monastery, this short walk through the avenue is for you. Although this is a separate location, we recommend combining your visit with a visit to the church, as the two sites are only a few minutes’ walk apart. It is exactly the kind of place where you stop for a moment, breathe in the mountain air and enjoy the symmetry of the Baroque landscape.
