Admont Monastery

The Admont Monastery is located in Styria, Austria, at the foot of the Gesäuse National Park and is one of the most important Benedictine monasteries in Europe. The greatest pride of this Baroque complex is its library – the largest monastic library in the world – decorated with frescoes by Bartolomeo Altomonte, gold elements and sculptures. The library houses over 70,000 volumes and is a true masterpiece of Baroque art and spiritual scholarship. In addition to the library, visitors will also find a museum of modern and sacred art, a natural history collection and a monastic church. Also worth a visit are the surrounding gardens, which, especially in spring, offer beautiful colours, namely pink magnolias.

The only drawback is that dogs are not allowed inside the library, which is actually the biggest pride of this place. But in the surrounding gardens, yes.

The monastery’s surroundings are ideal for nature lovers and leisurely hikers, as it is in close proximity to the Gesäuse National Park, which is known for its dramatic rock formations, gorges and river canyons. The surrounding area offers hiking and cycling trails through the beautiful Alpine landscape with views of the Enns River.
