Day 1

Discovering Florence

If you've come to Florence by car, we have a great tip for parking your car or motorhome. If you're in Florence without a car, start your tour from the first place on your itinerary, the Basilica di San Miniato. Bus lines 12 and 13 will take you there. If you live in the centre, start your tour there. Our itinerary creates a circle, so it doesn't really matter where you connect :).

Parking near the centre in a strategic location near the attractions. Safe parking in a shaded area next to the park, the cathedral and the square with spectacular views. We recommend parking here as you can usually find a space, parking fees are relatively cheap considering the location and parking is free at night. There are no restrictions on parking for campers or longer vehicles. Parking is available along the road in front of the steps and the Cathedral of San Miniato al Monte. If you can’t find a space on Via delle Porte Sante, we recommend continuing on to the next church where additional parking spaces are available. It tends to be quite busy in the evening because of the beautiful view of Forte San Miniato. However, you can spend the night here comfortably in the van and with the use of earplugs, nothing will disturb you anymore.

Basilica di San Miniato

Florence, Tuscany

The Basilica of San Miniato al Monte is one of the most important religious buildings in Florence and one of the most important examples of Romanesque architecture in Italy. Located on top of a hill above the Arno River, it is considered one of the best places in the city to admire the panoramic view of the city.

The basilica was built on the site where, according to legend, Saint Miniato was executed in the 3rd century. Construction began in the 11th century and was completed during the 13th century.

One of the most striking features of the basilica is its marble façade, which is characterised by its rich decoration and architectural details. Inside, you will find magnificent frescoes and mosaics decorating the walls and ceilings. It is also known for its historical and religious importance.

But this place is also unique because of the stairs and the view of the city. You’ll find a lot of people here, especially in the evening, watching the sunset. If you’re passing by, it’s definitely worth a stop. It’s also a short walk from the basilica to Piazzale Michelangelo.

After parking your car in front of the basilica, we recommend taking some nice photos of Florence as it opens up in front of you. Mornings are quiet at the Basilica, which is why this place is our first stop on this itinerary.

Piazzale Michelangelo

Florence, Tuscany

Piazzale Michelangelo is a large square with parking offering stunning views of the city with an exceptional atmosphere. In the piazza itself you can find clothing markets, beautiful views, several bars and refreshment options, stairs where people sit at sunset, watching the sun and listening to street performers.

Piazzale Michelangelo was built in the second half of the 19th century and designed by the famous Florentine architect Giuseppe Poggi. It is named after Michelangelo Buonarroti, one of the greatest artists of the Renaissance, whose works left an indelible mark on Florence.

Piazzale Michelangelo is situated on a hill south of the Arno River, allowing for breathtaking views of Florence and its surroundings. The piazza features replicas of some of Michelangelo’s most famous statues, such as David, and other important sculptural works.

As with the previous stop, Piazza Michelangelo is usually quieter in the morning. Take advantage of this to take photos or explore the various statues and stalls. In the evening, you’ll be returning to your car through this spot, and it’s the perfect time to watch the sunset and listen to music from street musicians.

In addition to small snacks and a great bar where we recommend refreshing yourself, there are clean pay toilets. You can also connect to free Wi-Fi in the area. Entry is free and you can bring your dog.

Simple refreshments in the gardens of delle Rose. The bar is a small kiosk with umbrellas and outside seating, with a beautiful view and a unique atmosphere. For a quick refreshment we recommend the Lemoncello Spritz or the typical granita.

You’ll also pass through this park and past the bar on your way back to your car or to the sunset in Piazza Michelangelo. So if you miss the opening of the bar or simply don’t feel like it, don’t despair – a drink tastes even better at sunset!

Pitti Palace and Giardino di Boboli

Palácio Pitti, Piazza de' Pitti, Florence, Metropolitan City of Florence, Italy

The Pitti Palace, once the residence of the Dukes of Tuscany, is an impressive example of Renaissance architecture in Florence. Located on the south bank of the Arno River, it served as a residence for important Florentine families, including the Medici. Today, the Pitti Palace is home to several important art collections and galleries. The Giardino di Boboli are extensive gardens that are part of the grounds of the Pitti Palace, but are also an attraction in their own right. If you want to see the art collections, museums and gardens of the Boboli, which are part of the palace, you must pay an entrance fee, except for children and students. The combined entrance fee will set you back €22. For more details on admission fees, click here. If you’re not a complete fan of museums and artworks, you can also admire the palace from the outside, where it will surprise you especially with its size.

Want to take a break from the people and the hustle and bustle of Florence? We definitely recommend this quiet café a short walk from the Pitti Palace. There is a wide selection of sweet and savoury pastries, excellent coffee and a very tasty brunch or even lunch. So you can choose something other than the classic Italian croissant. If you need to take care of some work stuff or plan the rest of your vacation, it’s also a great place to work in peace on the fast free wifi.

Ponte Vecchio

Florence, Tuscany

The Ponte Vecchio is one of the most famous bridges in Florence and one of the most iconic symbols of the city. Its history dates back to the Middle Ages, although the bridge that stands today is the result of reconstructions after floods and fires.

One of the most characteristic features of the Ponte Vecchio are the shops and boutiques that stretch along its length. These shops are traditionally associated with the sale of jewellery, especially goldsmiths’ wares, which gives the bridge a special atmosphere and attracts many visitors from all over the world.

The Ponte Vecchio crosses the Arno River and connects the historic parts of Florence between the Oltrarno and Centro Storico areas. The bridge offers a beautiful view of the river and the surrounding architecture, including palaces and churches.

Historically, the Ponte Vecchio was a place where meat was sold, but in the 16th century all the meat shops were removed and replaced by goldsmiths’ workshops, which was intended to reduce the smell on the bridge. This change contributed to the unique character of the bridge, which it still has today.

Get ready for the bridge to get really busy. The crowds of tourists are really hard to avoid. Also, stop at the viewpoints in the middle of the bridge to take some nice photos.

Even if you’re not a fan of art, this gallery is really worth it and will leave an impression. Piazza della Repubblica

Florence, Tuscany

Piazza della Repubblica, in the very centre of Florence, is one of the city’s most lively and characteristic places.

The history of Piazza della Repubblica dates back to antiquity, when it was the site of the Roman Forum, the centre of public life in ancient Florence. However, today’s piazza is the result of a major reconstruction that took place in the 19th century under the influence of the urban changes associated with the unification of Italy. At the centre of the square is the imposing Arco di Trionfo, a triumphal arch built in honour of the unification of Italy.

Piazza della Repubblica is also a lively cultural centre in Florence. Its surroundings are full of historic cafés, restaurants and boutiques. Locals and tourists alike come here not only for the good food and drink, but also for the atmosphere, which is steeped in history and tradition.

There are also regular cultural events, street performances and festivals that bring even more life to the square. Here you can often meet local artists, listen to live music or simply soak up the atmosphere of the city.

Piazza della Repubblica is also famous for its markets and shops, which offer a wide range of products. Every day there is a market where local traders offer fresh food, handicrafts, souvenirs and other goods. For shopping enthusiasts, this square is the perfect place to discover authentic Tuscan products and souvenirs.

If you’ve enjoyed the atmosphere of the square, we also recommend stopping by the famous Gilli café for a coffee and a bite to eat. A small snack will be handy for the rest of the program.

Caffé Gilli

Firenze • $$

An elegant café with history and an even better view and seating right by the Republic Square. The interior of the café is a real experience that will take you back in time. There are also very good cupcakes and a wide selection of different cakes. We recommend sitting outside and soaking up some more of the atmosphere from the square.

Santa Maria del Fiore

Florence, Tuscany

Santa Maria del Fiore, also known as Florence Cathedral, is one of the most important and beautiful cathedrals in the world. Its imposing dome, designed by the famous architect Filippo Brunelleschi, is one of the most important technical and architectural achievements of its time. Its pomp symbolises the wealth and art of Renaissance Florence.

Construction of the cathedral began in 1296 on the site of the older Basilica of Santa Reparata and took several centuries to complete. The cathedral combines elements of Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance styles, giving its architecture a unique, eye-catching appearance.

The cathedral is decorated with many works of art, including paintings, sculptures and stained glass windows from different periods and artistic movements. One of the most important works of art inside the cathedral is the fresco The Last Judgement by Giotto di Bondone. Florence Cathedral is also known for its famous stone facade, which is richly decorated with marble and coloured tiles. This facade is considered one of the most important works of Gothic architecture.

In addition, Florence Cathedral is surrounded by other important buildings, such as the Baptistery of San Giovanni and the Giotto Bell Tower, which form a unique complex of historical monuments.

Overall, Santa Maria del Fiore is one of the most important historical and religious monuments in Florence and an essential stop for any visitor to this Italian city. Its beauty and historical significance make it one of the most desirable tourist destinations in Tuscany and all of Italy.

Piazza della Signoria

Florence, Tuscany

Piazza della Signoria is, in our opinion, one of the most beautiful squares in Florence, a place rich in history, art and politics. Surrounded by important historical buildings and statues, this square is not only a symbolic meeting point but also an important cultural and tourist destination.

Piazza della Signoria has roots dating back to the Middle Ages, when the ancient Forum of Florence stood here. However, the piazza took its present form during the Renaissance and Baroque periods, when culture and art flourished here. The centre of the square is dominated by the Palazzo Vecchio, an imposing Florentine Renaissance-style palace that served as the residence of Florentine rulers.

The square is the natural centre of cultural life in Florence. Around the square there are museums, galleries, historic palaces and churches. Among the most important works of art are sculptures such as Michelangelo’s famous David or Benvenuto Cellini’s bronze Perseus.

The square is also surrounded by historic cafés, restaurants and shops offering authentic Tuscan food and produce. Cultural events are regularly held here, including concerts, theatre performances and festivals.

Piazza della Signoria has witnessed important political events and meetings over the centuries. It is the site of Florence’s Town Hall, which served as the centre of the city’s administration and political life. The square was also the site of public meetings and displays of political power.

There are other places to discover and visit around the cathedral and the square, such as churches or galleries that may be part of it, or the buildings themselves. It’s up to you whether you decide to go inside, pay the entrance fee, or just admire it from the outside. Even if you’re running out of time, we always recommend at least walking next to the monument. You will already have an unforgettable experience.

All’Antico Vinaio

Firenze • $$

All’Antico Vinaio is a unique sandwich shop in Florence near Piazza della Signoria, making it a great choice for a snack in the city centre. The place is best known for the fact that you’re likely to see a queue, which is a sign of the place’s popularity and quality. When you get in line, you’ll be surprised at how quickly the staff works to prepare your sandwich exactly to your liking. The menu is simple, but there’s truly something for everyone to choose or combine. There are a variety of breads and fillings such as traditional Tuscan salami, cheeses, pesto, vegetables and other delicacies. The size of the sandwiches is overwhelming, which means you’ll have plenty of tasty bites to stave off hunger for the day. And when you taste the first bite, you’ll understand why this place is so popular.
