One of the most popular hiking destinations and the main symbols of the Dolomites are the rock towers of the Cinque Torri, in the mountain saddle of Falzarego. Take the ascent route no. 441. It’s a pleasant walk with no major elevation gain. In September 2023, the main route was closed, so we had to take a more circuitous route, over several paths covered in large boulders. It required a bit of uninsured “rock climbing”. If you want to avoid such an adventure (perhaps for the kids), there is a cable car up there.
The towers originally formed one solid boulder, but over time and due to erosion they have been divided into 5 separate peaks. The highest of them is Torre Grande 2 361 m. When the weather cooperates and the clouds reveal the beauty of the surrounding landscape, you will feel like you are in the Kingdom of Rohan (*Lord of the Rings). Here you will also find the remains of World War I. The Italians have preserved an open-air museum here, thanks to which you can visit reproductions of military objects, bunkers, officers’ dwellings and firing ranges.
The rock towers are popular among climbers. There are around 100 routes, from the easiest to the most difficult.
