São Vicente

São Vicente is one of the most beautiful cities in Madeira. It can be found in the north of the island and we highly recommend making this strategic point your basecamp for a few days. São Vicente is set in a wine valley that stretches from the Atlantic to the interior. All around are green hills dotted with vineyards and meadows. In the small historic centre there is (again on a hill) a 16th century Gothic church, which is the main landmark of the town. We recommend climbing the few steps up to the church courtyard, as from here you’ll have a great view of the whole town and the ocean. There are also plenty of nice cafes, bakeries and restaurants in the city centre. The town often hosts festivals and outdoor concerts.

São Vicente is also known for its fascinating caves, created by a volcanic eruption thousands of years ago. Grutas de São Vicente are open to the public and offer visitors a unique glimpse into the underground world with beautifully formed stalactites and stalagmites. The caves are only accessible with a guide. A 17-minute drive from here you are in Porto Moniz, where you can take a great dip either in a natural lake created by volcanic action or next door in a paid and landscaped swimming pool. It’s even closer to the beautiful black sand beach of Seixal.
