Austria is a Central European country, directly neighbouring the Czech Republic and Slovakia. It is a country that offers incredibly beautiful nature, be it mountains, alps, lakes, waterfalls or historic cities. This is why Austria is a very popular destination for both summer and winter holidays.

In Austria you can experience and enjoy nature hikes, skiing, rock and mountain climbing and cycling. It is simply the ideal destination for long weekends and holidays of a week or more. Austria offers several very popular areas that are only a few minutes or hours from the Czech border.

Austria also offers countless ski resorts, from the larger ones such as Schladming, Kaprun to smaller ones such as our recommended Katschberg.

When is the best time to visit Austria?

In the case of Austria, it cannot be said that it is best to visit at one particular time. It really depends on what you want to experience on your travels and what activities you plan to do. In general, however, summer and winter are the best times to visit. In summer, the weather is very good for hiking, swimming in lakes and visiting towns. In winter, on the other hand, Austria has great conditions for skiing, which usually lasts until the beginning of spring.

How expensive is it in Austria?

In general, Austria tends to be one of the more expensive destinations. However, it depends on the season and your requirements. Our experience tells us that you can find very affordable accommodation that is comparable in price to that in the Czech Republic and the quality is usually a bit higher.

How to get around in Austria?

The most suitable means of transport for travelling around Austria is definitely a car. However, there is also a very good rail network in Austria and if you are a traveller who prefers to drive, you will be able to plan your trips by train.

In Austria, specifically in Vienna, there is a very popular airport, which is the starting point for many Czechs and Slovaks – there are many more routes, often at better prices.

How many days do I need to visit Austria?

Thanks to its location near the Czech Republic or Slovakia, Austria has the advantage that it is “worth” coming here even for a day or a weekend. Of course, there are also areas further south/west where such a detour may not be entirely worthwhile.

Do I need cash in Austria?

In most cases, no. Austria has a better than average card payment infrastructure, but there are still businesses that only accept cash. Therefore, we recommend that you bring at least a small amount of EUR with you.

Is there drinking water in Austria?

Yes, in the vast majority of places in Austria the water is drinkable.
